Last year I went south Texas on my way back east, this time I opted to go north. I realized as I was driving around that I had driven through the Guadalupe Mountains before when we came to Carlsbad Caverns in 2009. While I’m definitely not as impressed with Guadalupe as I was with Big Bend, I’m really glad we checked it out. I nearly died while hiking out to the original homestead. I sat down to rest a minute after hiking about a mile out into the desert. I had my earphones in and decided to take them out to listen to the desert and immediately heard an angry rattlesnake. I jumped up and looked all over for it, but never actually saw it. They are perfectly camouflaged for the desert! This has prompted me to get a phone with satellite capabilities, so I don’t die in the desert.
